Welcome to the Department of Economics

The Department of Economics began its journey way back in 1945 since the inception of the college. Being one of the oldest departments of this college, the department has traversed a long distance in course of all these years. Initially, the department offered only the general course in Economics of Calcutta University. However, it was in 1989 that the department started Honours course in Economics.

From its very beginning the focus of the department was to ensure a quality education for all its students which not only would enable them to achieve success at the University examination but would also help them in advancement of their career in future.

Departmental Activities

1. The students are encouraged for seminar presentation and also for participation in seminars / debates organized by the other colleges and inter-college competitions.

2. The Department of Economics organizes seminars, special lectures for the overall development of its students as well as peers. A UGC sponsored seminar on Emerging Challenges and Prospects before India in the New World Order was organized by the department in 2005. A special lecture session, by the renowned scholar and economist, Professor Sugata Marjit,was also arranged by the department.

3. The Department also organized a career guidance programme for the students on 2005, conducted by Eastern Institute for Integrated Management in Learning. A book exhibition was also organized in the same year.

4. As extra curricular activities the department has organized excursions, film shows etc. for the students.

5. In 2007 and 2008 the students of the Department arranged a fund raising programme for The Braille Press and Library Project of Blind Persons’ Association , Kolkata.

6. Parent Teacher meetings are also regularly organized to discuss and exchange the views regarding the achievements and shortcomings of the students with their parents.

7.The Students of the department regularly maintain their wall project (Wall Projection). Another combined effort of the students, ex-students and the teacher is the departmental magazine, Reflection.

 

 

UGC Sponsored Seminar

 

Departmental Library

A humble effort of the faculty members is the departmental library. It started its journey with only 20 books and 2 reports. Till then, the library has flourished both in quality and in quantity. Now the library is enriched with:

  • more than 100 text books on Economics (Honours level).
  • Three journals are - Yojana, Kurukshetra and Indian Macro Annual.

A handful of different issues of annual reports - World Development Report, Human Development Report, Economic Survey of India, Survey Of Indian Industries and the Survey Of Indian Agriculture.

DEPARTMENTAL RESULTS

 

  • Since 1989 many students of the department both in Honours as also in General courses have graduated from Calcutta University. The results of the departmental students over the years suggest that the Department of Economics has been able to take one small step forward towards its goal of helping students to achieve and progress in life.The success rate of the departmental studentsin the university examinations both in the Honours and General courses have been 100% with an odd exception during a year or two when the success rates were around 90%. Inthe years of 2007,208 and 2009 the success rates of B.Sc.Final Honours Examinations were 100%, whereas the same for the General courses was 97% in 2007 and 100% in 2008. In 2007 Rajyasri Roy, one of the Honours students got 64% marks in her final examination.
  • The rates of progression to higher studies from the Honours courses were also 100% in 2007 and 2008. In 2009,Rajyasri Roy stood 9th in her M.Sc. Final Examination with an aggregate of 69.75% marks.
