The Department of History, Women’s Christian College, was established in 1947, two years after the inception of the College in 1945. It was initially entrusted with the responsibility of preparing students for the B.A. Pass Course Examination under the University of Calcutta, to which the college is affiliated. The department was at first manned by Smt. Sudhira Nag, later helped by two other faculty members.
After more than three decades, during which the department continued with its dedicated efforts to promote women’s education, there came an opportunity to expand. In the year 1981, with sanction from the Government of West Bengal and approval from the University of Calcutta, the History Department opened its Honours Course in addition to the Pass Course. At that point of time, Sm Jhuma Chakraborty and Sm Joyshree Ghosh joined the department in 1981 and 1982 respectively in the two new posts that were now sanctioned. The number of students taking up honours courses increased steadily and the academic records improved too.
From the very beginning, the faculty members have taken personal interest and initiative in building up a well-equipped reference library suited to the needs of the students. Excursions to places of historical interest were also organized regularly. After the superannuation of Sm Jyotsna Biswas and Sm Sathi Roy, Sm Chandrima Mondal and Sm Nabanita Mitra have joined the department further adding too its strength.
The Department of History takes pride in the fact that the faculty members not only contribute towards the academic improvement of the students but also take special care to help the students in need, providing them with financial assistance and looking into various problems as faced by them. Counseling in extra-academic matters and sympathetic handling of students’ affairs help in the development of healthy teacher-student relationship. Parent-Teacher meetings (PTMS) are held regularly with a view to appraise the guardians about the progress of their wards.
The Department of History
A seminar library catering to the needs of the honours students has been set up containing more than 250 books and two journals has been set up with contributions from faculty members and students .Audio visual shows are organized as teaching aids to give students a wider perspective on the subject.
