Welcome to Philosophy Department

Department of Philosophy began its journey under the active initiative of two dedicated teachers Late Subinita Chowdhury and Late Sushil Kumar Lahiri since the inception of the college in 1945. Honours course was subsequently introduced in 1981.The aim of the department is not only to impart lessons to the students,but also to ensure their overall uplftment. Students of the department show consistently good performance in University examinations.

Departmental Activities

Apart from conventional class room teaching the department has been engaged in various kinds of other activities academic, social and cultural fields to enlighten fields to enlighten the teachers and students of the departments as well.

 

 

Special Lectures :

The department arranges special lectures every year. Renowned scholars are invited to deliver lecture on topics included in the syllabi (Honours).

 

Departmental Seminar

The department is extremely proud have two erudite scholars Dr Tapan Roy Chowdhury, Emeritus Professor of History, Oxford University and Dr. Amlan Dutta, Ex- Vice Chancello, Viswa Bharati University as invited speakers in the seminar entitled “Some Issues Relating to Gandhi's Philosophy” organized by th department on March 12, 2004. The entire programme was funded by Corporate Sectors.

The department has also organized a two day U.G.C. sponsored Seminar entitled “Applied Ethics : Some Issues” on September 23 and 24, 2005. Eminent scholars from different academic institutions as well as renowned personalities from different spheres of life were the speakers.

Student Seminar

Student Seminar is an integral part of the departmental teaching.It is presented by the students themselves once in a year. Participation of the students,both as speakers and audience, in such programmes gives them wide exposure to the subject.

 

Extra Carricular Activities

  • Students are encouraged to take part in various cultural competitions organized by our college and in other platforms.They often secure top positions in the competitions.
  • Beauty Mitra,an ex-student,is a renowned poet and has authored a book entitled"Brittu Biera Danrea".
  • Reshmi Sen,also an ex-student, is associated with - established theatre group named " Swapnasandhani" and has established herself as a good actress.

Departmental Magazine

The department publishes its own journal entitled ”Disha” contributed by students, faculty members and renowned academicians as well.

Students regularly put up Wall magazine named “Prayash” where the articulate their views on different philosophical issues.

 

Departmental Library

The department has an enriched seminar library catering to the needs of the departmental honours students. It has a well-balanced blend of text books and reference materials.

 

Achievements of students

Students of the department show consistently good performance in university examinations. Some of them are doing research works,such as M.Phil and Ph.D,in different universities.

A good number of students have got academic assignments in different schools and colleges. With the current trend of society they are also joining corporate sectors.

Achievements of teachers

  • Dr. Dipali Mukherjee, the former Head of the Department of Philosophy completed UGC sponsored Minor Research Project entitled: “AHINSA : Its need and implemention" in 2007
  • Dr Mitashree Chakraborty published an article entitled ”Hum's Notion Of Causality” in Calcutta University Journal in 1993.
  • Ms Sarbani Ganguly has - published an article entitled “Jnaner Chaturtha Sarta ” (1984) in the journal ‘Darsan'

    presented a paper entitled " The Fourth condition of Knowledge" in May '06 at theDepartment of Philosophy at Women's Christan college.

  • Ms.Sikha Mukherjee -
  • published an article entitled " The Proposition:Its nature" in a magazine known as ' Truth ????.... on Enquiry and Knowledge ' published by the department of Philosophy, Naba Ballygunge Mahavidyalaya in December,2006.
  • presented a paper entitled " Gricean Account of Speaker - Meaning : An Examination " in May , 2005 at the department of Philosophy at Women's Christian college.
  • Ms Urmi Roy - Registersd for ph.D degree in C.U.

Ms. Sikha Mukherjee published an article entitled ‘The Proposition: Its nature' in a magazine known as ‘Truth????.... On Enquiry and Knowledge' published by the department of Philosophy, Naba Ballygunge Mahavidyalaya in December, 2006.

Ms. Sikha Mukherjee also presented a paper entitled “Gricean Account of Speaker – Meaning An Examination” in May, 2005 at the department of Philosophy at Women Christian College .

Ms Sarbani Ganguly has presented an paper entitled “The Fourth Condition of Knowledge” in May '06 at the Department of Philosophy at Women Christian College .

 

Other Activities

Parent Teachers Meeting : Every year teachers of the department meet students of honours courses to apprise them of the academic performance of their wards.

Extension Service : To awaken social responsibilities among the students the department arranges extension program each year. Students have been generating fund for the welfare of Blind Persons' Association, 10/2, Samsulhuda Road, Kolkata - 17 during the last two years.

Educational Excursion : The departmental excursion is regularly conducted for an intimate informal interaction between the teachers and the students.
