About

Sociology as a general subject was introduced in Women’s Christian College from 1st September 2005. Sociology as Honours subject was introduced from the academic session 2012-13. There are four teachers in the department.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

Seminars and Lectures organized by the Department of Sociology

  • On 1st October 2008 Department of Sociology organized a seminar on the ‘Changing Status of Women’. Dr. Deboprasad Chatterjee, Head of the Department of Sociology, Maulana Azad College, Kolkata was the resource person.
  • On 13th August 2013, a Special Lecture on ‘Cross-Border Trafficking Between India and Bangladesh was organized in the Department of Sociology. The resource person was Shri Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan, of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences.
  • On 13th September 2013 a Special Lecture was organized on ‘Juvenile Delinquency-A Sociological Perspective’ . The resource person was Dr. Bipasa Basu, Advocate and Academician.
  • On 28th November 2014 a UGC sponsored National Seminar on ‘Cyber Crime in the Twenty-First Century in India was held. Shri Sonal Agnihotri IPS, from the Central Bureau Of Investigation,Government of India,was the keynote speaker. Other eminent speakers included Dr. Ravinder Singal IPS (from the state of Maharashtra); Shri Bivas Chatterjee, Advocate, High Court at Calcutta, Kolkata; Prof. Prasanta Ray of IDSK,Kolkata etc.
  • On 7th September 2015 a special lecture was organized on ‘Towards Reformation

:Navigating Possibilities’ . The resource persons were Sister Alexia A.C and Sister Srija A.C.
from Ashadeep, and Shri Nigil Akkara , Proprietor, Kolkata Facilities Management.

  • Prof.Prasanta Ray of Institute of Development Studies,Kolkata delivered a lecture on “Greed”.

The lecture was organized by the West Bengal Political Science Association,in collaboration
with Women’s Christian College-IQAC and Department of Political Science and Sociology on
24th February 2018.

Academic Initiatives For Students

Academic Excursions for Students :

  1. 2017: As a part of Part III (H) dissertation, a field study was organized where students visited a village in Raichak to collect data.
  • 2017: Ramakrishna Mission Swami Vivekananda Ancestral House and Cultural Centre.
  • 2016: As a part of Part III (H) dissertation, a field visit to the Tea Gardens in North Bengal was organized.
  • 2015: Kolkata Police Museum.
  • 2014: Jorasakho (Rabindranath Tagore’s Home) and Town Hall.

Such academic excursions help students to acquire knowledge about the socio-cultural history of Kolkata. First, second, third year students of the Department of Sociology were part of academic excursions. Topics such as Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda are part of their academic curriculum. So visiting such places helps to enhance their knowledge. At Ramakrishna Mission Swami Vivekananda Ancestral House and Cutural Centre a documentary on Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Swami Vivekananda were shown. Third year students visited the Tea Gardens in North Bengal in 2016. Students of third year have done a dissertation on tea plantation worker and the problems they confront in their lives. The Kolkata Police Museum is located in North Kolkata. The history of Kolkata police is documented in that museum. Students were shown a documentary on the history of Kolkata Police. They also visited the exhibition on Kolkata Police. In 2014 students visited Jorasakho to learn about the 19th century Bengal, role of Tagore family with special reference to Rabindranath Tagore.The feedback from the students have been positive. ‘Live’ documentation of history helped them to understand the culture of the place.

Other Activities of the Department of Sociology :

  • Students participated at a panel discussion on ‘South Asian Democracy and Human Rights’ organized at the Rotary Sadan on 28th November 2015.
  • Students visited and participated at a program on ‘Alaska’ at the American Centre, Kolkata in 2017.
  • A movie ‘Modern Times’ were shown to the students on 24thAugust 2017.
  • Students of 2nd year Sociology Honours participated as respondents in a survey on ‘Marriage’ conducted by Shibashis Mukherjee, Professor of Organizational Behaviour, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
